The Great Sock Debate: Ankle vs. Crew Socks — We Say Wear What Makes You Happy

The New York Times published an article declaring that a generational divide has broken out of socks, more specifically, sock lengths.  According to the Times, millennials and Gen Z are waging a battle over ankle socks versus crew socks. Gen Z, with their preference for crew socks, are giving the cold shoulder to the ankle socks favored by many millennials.

Kalissa Persaud, a 22-year-old from Queens, almost exclusively wears crew socks, stating, “I’ve gotten so used to not seeing my ankles that it would be really jarring if I did.” Similarly, Night Noroña, an 18-year-old from San Diego, has ditched all his ankle socks, joking that only his father wears them.

The debate has sparked numerous social media posts, with some millennials fiercely defending their beloved ankle socks. Comedian Matt Bellassai declared, “You will pry these ankle socks off my cold, dead feet,” in one of many TikTok videos on the subject.

We know this is all in fun. At John’s Crazy Socks, we want to be clear that we see no need  to pick sides. We’re on a mission to spread happiness and part of that mission means we want our customers to choose the socks they love. We have socks for everyone and that includes ankle and crew socks.

For what it’s worth, John wears ankle socks and John wears crew socks. John wears whatever suits his mood. His dad is mainly a crew sock guy.

We embrace all sock wearers, including those on team ankle socks and those on team crew socks. We offer a fantastic variety of ankle socks, perfect for those who enjoy a lower profile look and the freedom it provides. For those who prefer the stylish coverage of crew socks, we have an equally impressive selection.

Ultimately, socks are a personal choice, and we believe you should pick what’s right for you. And when it comes to what socks other people wear, we think it’s best to remember the advice of the immortal Ted Lasso: “Be curious, not judgmental.”

So, go ahead and wear your socks—ankle or crew—with pride. Celebrate your individuality and embrace the fun in fashion. After all, at John’s Crazy Socks, we’re here to spread happiness one sock at a time.

About John’s Crazy Socks

John’s Crazy Socks was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down syndrome, and his love of colorful and fun socks—what he calls his “crazy socks.” He and his father, Mark X. Cronin, started the company as a social enterprise with a mission of Spreading Happiness™. With more than 4,000 socks, John’s Crazy Socks is now the world’s largest sock store. More than half their employees have a differing ability, and their Giving Back program has raised over $750,000 for charity partners like the Special Olympics, the National Down Syndrome Society, and the Autism Society of America.
