Matt’s Blog #1 - College: The Final(s) Frontier

Matthew Carvajal is young man with Asperger’s syndrome, a condition on the Autism spectrum.Matt, a Sock Wrangler and Sock Scriber at John’s Crazy Socks, is an essential team member working to spread happiness and show every day what is possible when you give a person a chance. Matt is going to college for the first time and sharing his experience, so others can learn of the challenges someone with Asperger’s faces and inspire others to know that they are not alone.

College, most people think of it as a nerve-racking place where papers that need completing are flying after you at 100 mph. I used to think that too, until I went there. Although it does require a responsible mindset and follow through, it’s not as hard as its portrayed to be. I go to Farmingdale State College and honestly, it can be a quite a bit of fun. With places like an exercise rooms, a massage parlor, dental services, and even a built in highly functioning cafeteria with a Starbucks and a make-your-own milkshake machine. Not to mention all the many types of clubs and sport teams.

If a sock wrangler/sock scriber with Asperger’s can manage college and enjoy it, I’m positive others can do so as well. Colleges now are accepting people with disabilities much more and understanding their needs better in recent years. They are seeing people that are like me have much to contribute to society. If you take away anything away from this blog, just remember that if I can do it, you can do it.

Good luck!

Matthew Carvajal
