What is DOGust First?

North Shore Animal League America declared the first day of August as DOGust 1st® the official birthday of all rescue dogs or, as they like to call them, Mutt-i-grees. DOGust First is now recognized as the birthday for all rescue dogs and stray dogs nationwide.

It has become an annual day to promote the adoption of rescue dogs. As part of the celebration, the North Shore Animal League and many of their partner shelters offered free adoption services in the first week of August (1 – 7).

Giving Back is an essential part of the mission at John’s Crazy Socks and the North Shore Animal League America is an important charity partner for John’s Crazy Socks. During the ceremony, John and Mark presented a “big check” to the North Shore Animal League America representing the actual donation they brought as part of their quarterly Giving Back donations.

John Cronin said, “We love visiting the puppies and want to do all we can to support the rescue efforts of the North Shore Animal League America.”

“North Shore Animal League America is such an important organization,” said Mark X. Cronin. “They rescue dogs and cats from puppy mills and dire situations across the country. They care for these animals and then place them in loving and caring homes. These pets bring such joy and happiness to their new homes that we always have to ask, ‘Who rescued whom?’”

To support the North Shore Animal League America, John’s Crazy Socks introduced its line of Animal Rescue Socks in early 2021. We donate 10 percent from the sale of the socks to the North Shore Animal League America. Now our line of Animal Rescue products include socks, blankets, stickers, gift packs and more. All of these products raise money for the North Shore Animal League America.

“We were so excited when John’s Crazy Socks approached us with this fun, generous partnership idea,” said Diana Zaferiou, VP, Strategic Development Partnerships, North Shore Animal League America. “John’s Crazy Socks and Animal League America are both Long Island based organizations with a mission to spread happiness.”

About John’s Crazy Socks

John’s Crazy Socks was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down syndrome, and his love of colorful and fun socks—what he calls his “crazy socks.” He and his father, Mark X. Cronin, started the company as a social enterprise with a mission of Spreading Happiness™. With more than 4,000 socks, John’s Crazy Socks is now the world’s largest sock store. More than half their employees have a differing ability, and their Giving Back program has raised over $630,000 for charity partners like the Special Olympics, the National Down Syndrome Society, and the Autism Society of America.
