Why National Disability Employment Awareness Month Matters to John’s Crazy Socks

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to promote inclusive workplaces. At John’s Crazy Socks, this month is more than an observance—it’s part of who we are.

Our co-founder, John Cronin, is a young man with Down syndrome who wanted to show the world what people with differing abilities can do. When he and his dad, Mark X. Cronin, started John’s Crazy Socks, they built inclusion into every part of the business. Today, more than half of our colleagues have a differing ability, and together we’ve built the world’s largest sock store.

Work that Matters

For many of our colleagues, this is their first job. That first paycheck is more  than moneyit’s a symbol of pride, accomplishment, and independence. At John’s Crazy Socks, we don’t give out jobs. Every team member earns their role and meets high expectations. Our warehouse team, for example, fulfills thousands of orders with 99.8% accuracybetter than Amazon.

Inclusion is Smart Business

Some people think hiring inclusively is an act of charity. We see it differently. Inclusive hiring is about tapping into talent that many businesses overlook. By welcoming people with differing abilities, we’ve built a stronger, more loyal, and more productive team.

Changing Minds, One Sock at a Time

Through our work, we want to break down barriers and show that people with differing abilities belong in every workplace. John himself says, Down syndrome never holds me back. His leadership as our Chief Happiness Officer proves that disability is not  a limitation—it’s part of human diversity that enriches our company and our community.

Why NDEAM Matters to Us

NDEAM is a reminder of why our mission is important. It celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and encourages more businesses to embrace inclusive hiring. For us, it’s a chance to share our story and inspire others to open their doors to talent they may be missing.

Join the Movement

This October, celebrate NDEAM with us. Support businesses that hire inclusively. Share stories that highlight ability. And wear a pair of John’s Crazy Socks to spread awareness and joy.
