John and Mark X. Cronin, the father-son duo behind John’s Crazy Socks, recently visited Molloy University to speak with students in the Molloy Opportunity for Successful Transition (MOST) Program. Their visit was filled with inspiration, encouragement, and an important message about the power of inclusion and meaningful employment.
The MOST Program is a two-year initiative designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities, ages 21-27, in developing the social and academic skills needed for a successful transition into adulthood. By providing an inclusive college experience, the program empowers students to build independence, gain workplace skills, and foster social connections.
A Story of Inspiration
John and Mark brought their powerful story to the students, sharing how John, a man with Down syndrome, struggled to find meaningful work after finishing school. In his last year of high school, John explored programs, schools and jobs, but could not find what he wanted. Unfortunately, this is a situation faced by most people with differing abilities; only one in five people with a disability are employed in the United States. But John would not settle.
Mark explains, “John is a natural entrepreneur, if he couldn’t find a job he liked, he would make one.”
John decided to create his own business. With a love for colorful socks and a passion for spreading joy, he suggested to his father that they sell socks together. That idea turned into John’s Crazy Socks, now the world’s largest sock store, with a mission of Spreading Happiness™.
An Engaging Talk
The students in the MOST Program were captivated by John and Mark’s story—one of perseverance, innovation, and a commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. They shared laughter, nodded in agreement, and some even wiped away tears as John and Mark spoke about the profound impact of meaningful employment on individuals with differing abilities. The students peppered the speakers with questions.
A Workplace That Embraces Inclusion
A key theme of John and Mark’s presentation was the importance of inclusion in the workplace. More than half of the employees at John’s Crazy Socks have a differing ability, and the company has built a culture that embraces diversity. Mark explained how hiring individuals with differing abilities is not just the right thing to do—it is also good business.
At John’s Crazy Socks, they have seen firsthand the benefits of an inclusive workforce. Employees with differing abilities bring dedication, positivity, and unique talents to the company. Their presence improves morale, increases productivity, and enhances retention. Additionally, an inclusive environment makes recruiting easier because people are drawn to businesses that value social impact and purpose.
John and Mark shared insights on the hiring process at John’s Crazy Socks, explaining how the company focuses on abilities rather than disabilities. Instead of assuming what a person cannot do, they look at what a person can do and create job opportunities that align with those strengths.
“Hiring people with differing abilities isn’t charity—it’s smart business,” Mark told the audience. “Our colleagues are talented, hardworking, and committed. They take pride in their work, and that makes all the difference.”
This message resonated deeply with the students in the MOST Program, many of whom will soon be entering the workforce. They saw in John an example of what is possible when people are given the chance to showcase their abilities.
An Emotional and Uplifting Experience
The response from the students was overwhelmingly positive. As John and Mark wrapped up their talk, the audience erupted in applause.Students lined up to shake hands with John, while others eagerly posed for photos with him.
Many students and faculty members expressed how much the talk meant to them. Some were inspired to think about their career paths differently, while others felt encouraged to advocate for greater inclusion in their communities.
One student, after meeting John, said, “I feel like I can do anything now. John has shown me that there are no limits.”
Another attendee, a faculty member, shared, “The Cronin's" story is a reminder that we all have something valuable to contribute. Inclusion isn’t about doing favors for people—it’s about recognizing the strengths that everyone brings to the table.”
John was thrilled to meet so many students. “I love talking to people and making new friends,” he said with a big smile. “I want everyone to know that we can do great things!”
