How Custom Socks Helped the LIRR TRACKS Program Make Safety Memorable
Public Safety Education · Long Island Railroad
When the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) TRACKS program sought an innovative way to amplify their rail safety education message, they discovered the perfect solution: transforming winning student artwork into custom safety socks that would resonate throughout their community.
The Challenge: The LIRR TRACKS program ("Together Railroads and Communities Keeping Safe") runs an annual S.O.C.K.S. contest (Saving Our Communities by Keeping them Safe), inviting students to create artwork promoting train safety. They wanted to turn these winning designs into wearable safety messages that would engage students, parents, and community members alike.
The Solution: Linda Katz and Chrisann Fabio from the TRACKS program partnered with Carol Cronin, our Director of Custom Socks, to bring three winning student designs to life. Our collaborative process included:
- Carefully reviewing each student's original artwork
- Creating sublimated (printed) socks for two intricate, multicolored designs to maintain perfect design fidelity
- Developing a knit sock for the simpler, bold design to preserve texture and warmth
- Adding a thoughtful safety innovation: non-skid grips shaped like train tracks on the soles
"We loved working with you. You made everything so easy. The designs are perfect—better than we expected."
— Linda Katz, LIRR TRACKS Program
The result was a stunning collection of custom socks that celebrated student creativity, elevated the TRACKS safety message, and delighted everyone who received them. Carol Cronin reflected: "We were honored to work with the LIRR TRACKS program. Our goal was to create socks that students would love and that could amplify a life-saving message."
This partnership demonstrates how custom socks can serve as powerful tools for education and community engagement, turning important safety messages into conversation starters that people actually want to wear.
